"Gaming" (1st Place Winner)

Elijah P.

5th Grade | Caliber ChangeMakers Academy

Vallejo, California

In the world of gaming, I stand alone,

With a truth that many refuse to condone.

I dare to say what others may fear,

For my unpopular opinion is clear.

I believe that graphics don't make a game,

It's the gameplay that should take all the fame.

Fancy visuals may amaze the eye,

But without solid mechanics, a game will die.

Microtransactions, loot boxes plenty,

A practice that I simply despise.

Gamers deserve a fair and balanced field,

Not a pay-to-win system that never yields.

Sequels and reboots a dime a dozen,

and Originality seems to be forgotten.

I long for a game that breaks the mold,

Not just another story retold.

Perhaps my views may not be in fashion, But I stand firm, unswayed by the rogue.

For in the world of gaming, I'll remain true,

And champion the unpopular, through and through.

"Money" (2nd Place Winner)

Paris G.

8th Grade | KIPP STRIVE Academy

Atlanta, Georgia

Money can buy happiness

To be honest with you, I don’t want anything less

When I walk into the store all nonchalant

All I have to do is swipe that card and that's all I want

Cha-ching, cha-ching is the noise that clings

When I walk out of the store, I’m the one that sings

Count up all of my dollars, that makes me holler

Then go back to being a scholar

This makes me wonder why people say that “money is the root of all evil’

They scribble it on an easel

Anyway I think that nothing could be better

Because when I have it I feel as light as a feather

"Sephora Kids" (3rd Place Winner)

Madelyn Y.

5th Grade | Springdale Park Elementary School

Atlanta, Georgia

Sephora Kids are not bad

we’re just trying to shop

Everybody thinks we are mad

Even though we are not.

I walk into the store

I get side eyes left to right

Just trying to get a product

Always starts a fight

We’re just being ourselves

We’re not trying to destroy shelves

We’re just trying to live a life

Without people telling us what’s wrong or right

At the end of the day we are still children

Living our lives and having fun

We are not being villains

To everybody and everyone

"Unpopular"

Jasaiah H.

6th Grade | The Anchor School

Atlanta, Georgia

Unchallengeable but definitely exceptional.

I do my own thing and that’s totally acceptable.

Not under the influence of what is in right now,

I won’t be hypnotized by social media, I will not follow the crowd.

Uninfluenced, unapologetic,

not really concerned if the majority doesn’t get it.

I will learn, I will be kind, I will treat others nicely,

I will never give up, even if I mess up slightly.

My true self I won’t try to hide or cover.

I won’t change, my values remain the same.

I guess that makes me unpopular.
